The Need and Importance of Breastfeeding in The Modern Era and Its Practical Review
عصر حاضر میں رضاعت کی ضرورت و اہمیت اوراطلاقی جائزہ
Abstract
In the contemporary era, the subject of Rada‘a (fosterage / suckling) has transcended its traditional juristic boundaries to intersect with modern medical, social, and ethical challenges. This article explores the necessity, significance, and applied juristic analysis of Rada‘a in light of contemporary developments. Medically, human milk is irreplaceable for neonatal immunity and survival, particularly for preterm infants for whom formula milk poses serious health risks. Socially, breastfeeding reduces healthcare burdens and offers environmental benefits. Juristically, classical conditions of fosterage (complete suckling, prescribed quantity, period within two years, and unity of the milk-source) face new complexities in modern contexts. Emerging issues like human milk banks, IVF, and feeding of non-infants, have generated substantial juristic debate. While human milk banks address urgent medical needs, mainstream Islamic jurisprudence (including prominent Fatwas) deems them impermissible due to inevitable confusion of lineage (ikhtilāṭ al-ansāb) and violation of precise Shari’ah conditions. The article comparatively examines Ḥanafī and Imāmiyyah perspectives on key issues, including minimum quantity, effect of illicit milk, and continuity. It concludes by advocating systematic alternatives such as recognized foster-family networks, rigorous documentation in medical settings, and continuous ijtihād to reconcile neonatal care requirements with immutable sharī’ah principles.
