Abstract

This study examines the concept of ʿAqīqah in Islam and related sacrificial practices in pre-Islamic Arabia, Judaism, and Christianity through a research-based and comparative approach. It explores the pre-Islamic Arab tradition of ʿAqīqah, its association with the Abrahamic tradition, and the reforms introduced by Islam. The study also analyzes the concept of sacrifice in Judaism, including various forms of offerings, and examines the transformation of animal sacrifice in Christianity in relation to the doctrine of the sacrificial atonement of Jesus Christ. In contrast, Islam preserved and regulated the institution of ʿAqīqah as an expression of gratitude for the blessing of childbirth, obedience to Allah, charity, and social solidarity. By comparing these religious traditions, the study highlights their similarities and differences in terms of religious purpose, rituals, sacrificial practices, and theological significance. The study concludes that Islam reformed pre-Islamic practices and established ʿAqīqah within the framework of monotheism, Prophetic guidance, gratitude, and social welfare.
