Abstract

Every discipline that depends on transmitted information eventually confronts the same problem: a report may satisfy every visible criterion of soundness and still be unsafe to rely upon, because the defect within it is concealed rather than apparent. Muslim ḥadīth critics named this concealed defect ʻIllah and built around it the most demanding branch of ḥadīth scholarship, ʿIlm al-ʿilal. Modern forensic science, after two decades of internal audit, has arrived at a structurally similar problem: latent defects arising at collection, custody, analysis, interpretation or reporting that no surface inspection reveals. This study places the two systems side by side. It first reconstructs the lexical and technical meaning of ʻIllah from the primary Arabic sources and from recent Arabic scholarship, then sets out the critics' operative procedure in detail: iʿtibār and the assembling of all lines of transmission, the ranking of trustworthy transmitters, ʻilal by singularity and by contradiction, and the wide repertoire of corroborative indicators qara in that the critics deployed, twenty-two drawn from the isnad, twelve from the matn and six externals. Documented cases from al-Ḥakim, Ibn Abī Ḥātim, al-Bukhari, Aḥmad and al-Dāraquṭnī illustrate the method at work. The study then examines the forensic literature on chain of custody, method validation, cognitive bias and linear sequential unmasking, and surveys parallel defect-detection systems in textual criticism, digital forensics, forensic accounting and non-destructive testing. A comparative matrix identifies shared methodological principles and decisive divergences, and the charge that the comparison is contrived is answered directly. The study concludes that declaring a report sound on the strength of a superficially intact chain alone is methodologically indefensible.
