Dirāyah al-Ḥadīth: An Analytical Study of Its Concept, Development, and Significance in the Principles of Ḥadīth

Abstract

This study examines the concept, historical development, and significance of Dirāyah al-Ḥadīth within the broader discipline of Ḥadīth studies. It explores the linguistic and technical meanings of Dirāyah and traces its evolution as a critical methodology in the scholarly tradition of Ḥadīth. The study particularly analyzes the distinction and interrelationship between ʿIlm al-Riwāyah and ʿIlm al-Dirāyah, highlighting their complementary roles in the understanding, verification, and preservation of Prophetic traditions. It further investigates the application of Dirāyah in the critical evaluation of both Sanad and Matn, with particular emphasis on the principles employed by Ḥadīth scholars to assess the authenticity, reliability, and acceptability of narrations. The study also explores the contribution of Dirāyah to distinguishing authentic reports from weak, anomalous, and rejected narrations. Adopting a qualitative and analytical approach, the research draws upon classical and contemporary Ḥadīth literature to demonstrate the methodological foundations and scholarly significance of Dirāyah al-Ḥadīth. The study concludes that Dirāyah al-Ḥadīth constitutes an essential critical framework within Ḥadīth sciences, providing systematic principles for the analysis, evaluation, authentication, and preservation of Prophetic traditions.
