The Action of Ṣūfīs about Tolerance in the Light of Kashf al-Maḥjūb

Abstract

Human society has many kinds of differences, in which the lack of tolerance and respect for opinions can lead to many problems. Islam has a clear teaching that respect and politeness should not be left in spite of the strongest differences. This is called tolerance and its role in social stability is very important. Ḥaḍrat ‘Alī BinʿUthmān Al Hijwairī was the first Saint who sowed the seeds of Islām in Lahore. Hijwairī belonged to the Junaidia school of Sūfism, have a murshid (spiritual master). ‘Alī BinʿUthmān Al Hijwairī’s teachings were based on the pillars of “Tawḥīd”, “Taqwā”, “Ikhlāṣ” and Harmony among the people and society. During the reign of Hijwairī, People were divided into numerous backgrounds, and treated accordingly by the self-proclaimed high-caste Brahmins. In this situation, Hijwairī wrote the Kashf al-Maḥjūb. It is effort on the Early Persian Dissertation on Sūfism. Kashf al-Maḥjūb puts emphasis on the unity of mankind, doing good, repentance, piety, tolerance, equitability, trustiness, justice, humble submission gentleness, harmony, and love to mankind, On the other hand Hijwairī dislikes transgression, incendiarism, oppression, disregarders, and deception. The real Sūfism struggles to progress a man-fermented from love, messenger of ‘Ishq, representative of peace, and servant of mankind and advantageous to all are the open proof of this reality. In this article, by adopting a research and analytical method, an attempt has been made to review the sections related to tolerance and to clarify the behavior in the light of it. It is an unfortunate phenomenon of today that instead of living in harmony and peace on strictly humanitarian grounds people are being shown to be mutually inimical. In this situation, it is the duty of all Muslims to show the original Islamic teachings which are practiced by Sufism like ‘Alī Hijwairī. All people should educate to understand the real Islamic Sūfism teachings for the creation of peace and harmony all over the world.
