Islam, being the religion of nature, offers comprehensive guidance for every dimension of human life. Just as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was sent as a universal messenger, his teachings too are natural, timeless, and universally applicable. Whether it concerns personal conduct or collective matters—political, economic, social, or environmental—Islamic teachings provide complete and balanced principles for all circumstances. In today’s interconnected world—often referred to as a global village—humanity is confronted with increasingly complex challenges, particularly in the age of nuclear technology. Among these, environmental degradation stands out as one of the most critical global issues. The protection of the natural environment, especially in situations of armed conflict and violence, is not merely a modern concern but is also deeply rooted in Islamic ethics and prophetic guidance. This article explores the teachings of Islam concerning environmental preservation, especially during war and conflict, drawing insights from the life and practice (Sīrah) of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Islamic worldview on environmental ethics offers a compelling and practical framework to address modern environmental crises, including global warming and climate change. Principles such as tree plantation, conservation of natural resources, and protection of flora and fauna are deeply embedded in Islamic teachings. In the context of Pakistan, there is a pressing need to preserve green belts, forests, and vegetation, especially when developing new urban settlements. Islamic teachings, if effectively implemented, can serve as a guiding light for ecological sustainability and the protection of the environment in both times of peace and conflict.
