Abstract

Nikāḥ is the Arabic term for marriage, specifically in the context of Islamic tradition. It refers to the formal contract between a man and a woman, in which they agree to live together as husband and wife, with rights and responsibilities outlined for both parties. The Nikāḥ ceremony typically includes the recitation of specific verses from the Qur’ān, the presence of witnesses, and the agreement of a mahr (a dowry) from the groom to the bride. It is a religious and legal contract that holds spiritual, social, and legal significance in Islamic communities. Islamic marriage (Nikāḥ) is based on principles that aim to ensure mutual respect, responsibility, and companionship. In Islamic teachings, marriage is viewed as a partnership based on the mutual respect, trust and shared intentions. The requirement for mutual consent ensures that both the husband and wife are fully willing to enter into this lifelong commitment.
