Abstract

This study explores the pivotal role of trade routes in the early Islamic period, with a particular focus on their strategic importance as evidenced in the Sīrah Ṭayyabaﷺ, the biography of the Prophet Muḥammadﷺ. The research delves into how the control and security of these trade routes were integral to the economic and political stability of the nascent Muslim community. It examines key military strategies employed by the Prophet Muḥammadﷺ and his companions to protect and leverage these routes, ensuring the safe passage of goods and the expansion of Islamic influence. By analyzing historical battles and treaties, such as the Battle of Badr and the Treaty of Ḥudaybiyyah, the study highlights the intertwining of trade and warfare in Islamic statecraft. The findings underscore the Prophet’s strategic acumen in utilizing trade routes not only for economic prosperity but also for fostering alliances and asserting territorial control. This comprehensive overview provides a nuanced understanding of how trade and military strategies were harmonized to support the growth and sustainability of the early Islamic state.
