Abstract

The word “lexicon” means the vocabulary or words of a language. Actually, the term “lexicon” is a linguistic name for dictionary. It is defined as the study of the classes of words, their inflections, and their functions, and relationships in a typical sentence in the area of Universal Grammar, but there is another term “Lexicography” which is known as theory and practice of compiling dictionaries. It studies the lexicon as a research object. So, these disciplines have something to do with investigation into the Urdu lexicon using different methods and curriculums. However, they differ from one another in many Aspects. The work follows the descriptive method to explain the qur’anic lexical Efforts of scholars in subcontinent and their contribution in the field of Quranic dictionary in modern and postmodern Era. Moreover, the paper discusses the history of Urdu “lexicon” and its Roots in Arabic Language. The research also describes the different methods of Urdu Lexicography in the light of differences and similarities in the approaches taken by them as well as providing some examples of Quranic dictions in modern Urdu language for new generation.
