The Role of Khānqāh Sulemāniyah in the Moral and Spiritual Training of Common Muslims and Religious Scholars

Abstract

This article examines the role of Khānqāh Sulemāniyah in the moral, spiritual, and practical training of both common Muslims and religious scholars. It highlights how the mashā’ikh of this tradition did not separate knowledge from action, but treated both as essential for true reform. Their teachings gave special attention to sincerity, love of God, adherence to Sharīʻah, humility, good character, and social responsibility. The study also shows that their efforts were not limited to individual piety. They addressed wider social problems such as sectarianism, bribery, arrogance, backbiting, moral decline, and disunity among Muslims. Through their sayings, instructions, and reformative practices, the scholars and saints of the Sulemāniyah tradition offered a model of guidance that joined spiritual purification with ethical and communal reform. The article argues that Khānqāh Sulemāniyah served not only as a center of spiritual growth, but also as an institution of religious education, character building, and social correction.
